5 Haircare Mistakes You Need to Stop Making

If you believe that your hair is living tissue and will grow more the better you care for it, you are mistaken. In reality, the hair visible above the scalp is technically dead tissue. The part of the hair we see is primarily composed of a protein called keratin. Therefore, you cannot “revive” that part using creams, oils, or other treatments; you can simply keep it healthy, soft, and strong.

Before discussing hair care, it is crucial to understand this distinction. When we start believing that every problem can be solved with a product, we often overlook the daily habits that are actually damaging our hair.

That is why, in today’s article , we will talk about five common mistakes that many people make unknowingly on a daily basis. And yes, do watch the video until the end, because I am going to share some important points. So, let’s get started.

Mistake No. 1: Wearing Tight Hairstyles

The first mistake is often making a bun or hairstyle that is too tight. In fact, tying your hair too tightly puts unnecessary pressure on the roots and follicles, which can cause scalp strain, discomfort, or even pain.

Keeping your hair tightly tied for long periods of time can damage the hair follicles and lead to thinning of the hair near the hairline over time.

Therefore, avoid tying your hair too tightly every day. While styling, do not pull the hair so hard that it causes tension on the scalp; Keeping hair open or choosing a comfortable hairstyle can sometimes be a better option.

Mistake No. 2: Ignoring Hard Water

The second mistake is using hard water. If your home receives hard water which contains high levels of minerals like calcium and magnesium and you wash your hair with it, these minerals accumulate on the hair’s surface. This makes your hair look lifeless, coarse, dry, and weak, eventually leading to breakage.

So, how can you avoid this problem?

One solution is to use a water softener. However, if installing a water softener isn’t feasible, the easiest method is to give your hair a final rinse with a mug of RO water after washing it. Doing this prevents minerals like calcium and magnesium from building up on your hair, thereby reducing hair loss.

Mistake No. 3: Brushing Wet Hair

The third mistake is combing wet hair. Wet hair is more fragile and can break if combed forcefully.

To avoid this, you should first use a wide-toothed comb on wet hair. Then, start detangling from the bottom and gradually work your way up towards the roots. Doing this puts less stress on the hair and reduces the risk of breakage.

Mistake No. 4: Believing Your Shampoo Stops Working

Some people believe that hair becomes “addicted” to a particular shampoo, which eventually causes the product to become ineffective. However, there is no scientific evidence for this. If your shampoo seems less effective, it could be due to product build-up in your hair, changes in weather, sweat, styling habits, or stress.

There is no need to change the shampoo every few weeks without any good reason. If you feel like your hair has a build up of product, you can sometimes use a clarifying shampoo in place of your regular shampoo.

Mistake No. 5: Using Haircare Products in the Wrong Order

Now, let’s discuss the fifth and final mistake: using hair care products in the wrong order. Just as we follow a specific sequence in a skincare routine applying a cleanser first, followed by moisturizer, and finally sunscreen, a hair care routine also requires a specific order based on the purpose of each product. There is a set sequence for applying shampoo, conditioner, hair masks, leave-in conditioners, and serums.

If you use them in a random order, you won’t get the desired results; you will waste money, and product buildup will accumulate on your hair, making it feel unnecessarily heavy, sticky, and oily.

That is why simply buying expensive products doesn’t guarantee great hair; it is equally important to understand which product to use, as well as when, how, and why to use it.

Friends, so far we have discussed the mistakes that can cause external damage to our hair. However, if you are mindful of all these factors yet still experience excessive hair loss or gradual thinning, focusing solely on hair care products will not be enough. In such cases, it is essential to pay attention to your health and diet as well.
