Frizzy Hair

Has it ever happened to you that your hair looks perfect when you leave the house, but shortly after, it starts looking dry, lifeless, and frizzy?

Whether it’s due to high humidity, winter dryness, or the effects of frequent heat styling and chemical treatments, frizz can strike in any season. And the most frustrating part is when, no matter how many products you use, your hair simply refuses to be tamed.

But the good news is that controlling frizz isn’t as difficult as it often seems. There are some simple, practical ways to make your hair soft, healthy, and easy to manage. So, in today’s article, I’ll share some easy tips that you can incorporate into your daily hair care routine.

Hydration

First, it is important to understand why hair actually becomes frizzy (dry and lifeless).

The primary cause of frizz is dryness. When hair lacks moisture, it absorbs moisture from the surrounding air; this causes the hair to swell and become frizzy, making it difficult to manage.

Therefore, your main focus should be on keeping your hair hydrated. When buying shampoos, conditioners, or hair masks, do not make a decision based solely on the packaging; pay attention to the ingredients used as well. Ingredients like argan oil, glycerin, shea butter, avocado, and rice water help retain moisture and keep the hair hydrated.

Now, let’s talk about hair masks, as many people do not use them correctly. People often apply hair masks to wet hair, leave them on for a few minutes, and then rinse them off. While this method is fine and effective, there is another technique considered even more effective, known as “reverse conditioning.” Very few people are aware of it.

In this method, you need to divide your dry hair into small sections and apply the hair mask thoroughly to each section. Afterward, leave it on for about two hours before washing your hair with plain water.

This method is considered superior because a thin layer of water often remains on wet hair, preventing the mask from penetrating deeply; applying the mask to dry hair allows it to reach the roots and hair strands directly, resulting in better conditioning and nourishment.

Washing Habits

Now, let’s talk about hair-washing habits, as improper hair care is often the reason behind dry and lifeless hair.

Keep a simple tip in mind when choosing a shampoo. If you wash your hair daily or almost every day, a sulfate-free shampoo is a good option; it cleanses the scalp and hair without stripping away too much moisture.

However, if you wash your hair only once or twice a week, using a sulfate-based shampoo is fine. It helps to more effectively remove dirt, oil, and product buildup from the scalp.

Another aspect that many people overlook is conditioner. Applying conditioner after shampooing is essential. While shampoo cleanses the hair, the process can also strip away some of its natural moisture. The conditioner helps restore that moisture, making the hair soft and easy to manage.

Skipping conditioner can leave your hair dry and lifeless. Therefore, make sure to include conditioning in your routine whenever you wash your hair.

Drying & Styling

Now, let’s talk about drying and styling your hair. Many people believe that frizz is caused solely by products, but the way you dry and style your hair plays a crucial role as well.

First, try to use a wooden comb whenever your hair is wet. Plastic combs generate static electricity, which increases frizz, whereas wooden combs significantly reduce this issue.

After washing your hair, instead of rubbing it vigorously, wrap it in a towel and let it sit for a while to absorb excess moisture. Whenever possible, allow your hair to air-dry naturally; the less you use a blow-dryer, the better.

However, if blow-drying is necessary, keep a few things in mind: use a low heat setting, hold the dryer about 15 centimeters away from your hair, and always direct the airflow downwards (from roots to ends). Blow-drying in random directions puts unnecessary stress on the hair, making it look rough and frizzy.

If you have straight hair, let it dry slightly before combing; however, if you have curly hair, it is better to detangle it while it is still wet. This reduces the risk of breakage and damage later on.

Additionally, if you use heat styling tools, never forget to apply a heat protectant. Many people make a common mistake here: heat protectants are usually lightweight and water-like, so it often feels like you have applied enough product when, in reality, the quantity is insufficient. Therefore, apply a generous and even amount of heat protectant before you start styling.

Lifestyle Changes

Let’s discuss a few lifestyle habits that might seem minor but have a significant impact on hair health.

First, if possible, use satin or silk pillowcases instead of cotton ones, as their surfaces are smoother.

If you have long hair, tying it loosely before going to bed is a good habit; leaving it loose causes friction against the pillow throughout the night, leading to increased tangling and knots.

When it comes to hair oil, coconut oil or virgin coconut oil are excellent choices; they help provide a healthy shine and maintain hair strength.

Those who undergo treatments like coloring, perming, smoothing, or straightening need to take special care of their hair.

If you plan to get both coloring and smoothing done, opt for the smoothing treatment first and wait about two weeks before coloring. This gives your hair time to recover in between.

Finally, here is a point that is often overlooked: chemically treated hair is easily damaged by the sun. Therefore, try to cover your hair with a hat, scarf, or something similar whenever you step outside.
