There is something in your kitchen that can be even more beneficial than many expensive brightening serums and that is rice water.
For years, rice water has been a part of skincare routines across various cultures. It is believed to help soften the skin, improve a dull or uneven complexion, and enhance your natural glow. The best part is that you don’t need to buy any expensive products for this.
In today’s article, I will show you how to prepare a rice water toner at home, the correct way to use it, and the mistakes to avoid during application. If you use it consistently for a few days, you will gradually notice the difference in your skin yourself.
Why Does Rice Water Work?
First, let’s understand how rice water works on the skin.
It contains certain ingredients considered highly beneficial for the skin which is why rice water has long been used in skincare.
The first of these is kojic acid. Renowned for treating blemishes and uneven skin tone, this ingredient is commonly found in many brightening products. If you have old scars or an uneven complexion, this ingredient helps address those issues.
The second is ferulic acid, a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants help protect the skin from daily damage; for instance, ferulic acid helps mitigate the harmful effects of pollution, sunlight, and free radicals. Notably, this same ingredient which occurs naturally in rice water is also found in many expensive serums.
And this isn’t just a matter of ancient traditions or beliefs. Research indicates that soaking the skin in rice water for just 15 minutes can boost its healing capacity by approximately 20 percent giving the skin a little extra help to repair itself.
How to Make Rice Water Toner?
Let’s find out how you can make rice water toner at home.
First, take a bowl and add half a cup of rice to it. Pour in about two cups of water and let the rice soak for 30 to 40 minutes.
While the rice is soaking, gently stir it with your hands from time to time. Doing this helps the starch and other beneficial nutrients in the rice dissolve thoroughly into the water. Gradually, you will notice the water turning slightly white and cloudy; this is perfectly normal.
After 30 to 40 minutes, strain the mixture to separate the water from the rice. Pour the collected water into a clean glass bottle. Your basic rice water toner is now ready to be used in your skincare routine.
How to Use Rice Water Toner?
Whenever you wish to use it, start by washing your face thoroughly. Next, soak a cotton pad in the rice water and gently apply it all over your face, just as you would a regular toner. Aim for a thin, even layer on your skin. You can use it twice a day once in the morning and once at night.
After application, allow it to air-dry on your skin; generally, there is no need to rinse it off. Once dry, you can proceed with your moisturizer or other skincare products.
If you want to try a more potent version, you can ferment the rice water. To do this, simply leave the prepared rice water at room temperature for 24 to 48 hours. Natural fermentation occurs during this time, potentially increasing the concentration of beneficial compounds. For this reason, fermented rice water is considered more effective than regular rice water.
It is perfectly normal for fermented rice water to have a slightly sour smell. However, if it develops a very strong or foul odor resembling rotten eggs or something putrid—do not use it. It is best to discard such rice water and prepare a fresh batch. Using spoiled or contaminated products on your skin can cause more harm than good.
Storage & Shelf Life
If you are using plain rice water, it is essential to store it in the refrigerator; it generally stays good for 5 to 7 days. Fermented rice water can also be refrigerated and lasts for about 14 days. After this period, it is best to prepare a fresh batch to ensure you are using rice water that is fresh and safe.
As for the results, this is not an overnight miracle cure. However, with consistent and proper use, you may notice a subtle glow, softness, and freshness in your skin within 2 to 3 weeks. If your goal is to treat dark spots or uneven skin tone, you may need to be a bit more patient; in such cases, some people begin to see a difference after 6 to 8 weeks of regular use.
